The Beazler: In Search Of

Hard Chocolate Frosting Recipe. When I was young Beazle used to make this chocolate, for lack of a better word, frosting. It went on like regular frosting but hardened as it cooled. The next day the cake would be encased in a chocolate shell. When the cake was cut the chocolate would crack and a bit may fall off. The chocolate coating would have the consistance of a refrigerated Hershey(r) bar. I've asked Beazel how to make it but she doesn't cook by measurments. I've tried to make this frosting/coating but just haven't got it right. I've searched online but the recipes I found call for ingredients she didn't mention. She says all she used was cocoa, sugar, evaporated milk, and maybe a little butter. If anyone has this recipe please send it to me.

Biddy McGraw. I'm looking for a particular version of this song. Tom Barberi used to play it every St. Patrick's Day on KSL Radio. I thought it was by Dr. Demento or Weird Al Yackavich but I can't find it. If you think you've got it send me a link so I can listen.

David Kave. David and I went to the Arkansas School for the Blind together until we were in fourth grade. I thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. He moved to Oklahoma in 1971 and I haven't seen him since. One of a few not on Facebook.

What's in a Name?

When we were young, my sister and I called our mom, Mother. As we grew older we switched to the more popular, Mom. As the years went by, our mother became, Beazle. My sister doesn't remember if she or our dad gave Mom this name. My sister thinks it started because everyone at Mom's job called her Miss B. When Mom pulled into the driveway after work either my dad or sister would say Beazels home. Kind of a blend of be is home. That is as close as I can get for how Mom got her nickname. Even though Mom tells us not to call her Beazel it stuck. Now her grandchildren and daughter-in-law call her Beazel too.

Beazel is a unique person. She worked until she was 78. The only reason she retired was the store where she worked went out of business. She still cuts her own grass and putters around the yard. "I'll get stiff if I sit down," she says.

She and my dad were go getters. They bought a shell of a house in the early 1960's. This house had no plumbing, or water leading to the house, no kitchen, and some walls still needed drywall. They scrounged the parts they could and bought what couldn't be scrounged. They did a lot of the work themselves. They turned that unfinished house into a nice little home.

Though this blog is, for the most part, about me, I wanted to name it for Mom, Beazle. I have some posts about Mom planned for the future but I want this small tribute to stay on top. Beazle is an amazing lady. She will give you her opinion if you want it or not. Beazle will help you any way she can. Beazle cooks for an army when she hears any of us are coming for a visit. Beazle will throw your "junk" away in a heartbeat but won't allow you to get rid of any of hers because she may need it someday. You won't see any pictures of Beazle on this site because she doesn't want her picture online.
